Relations between Burkina Faso and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Traditionally based on development cooperation, relations between Burkina Faso and Luxembourg are complemented by political and diplomatic relations, and are diversifying, particularly in the economic sphere.
Development cooperation
In 1996, Burkina Faso was chosen as a partner country for bilateral cooperation by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The fact that a large number of Luxembourg NGOs were active in the country was a factor in this choice. The two countries signed a general cooperation agreement on October 27, 1999, formalizing cooperation between the two governments. In November 2006, a Luxembourg Cooperation Office was set up in Ouagadougou, and since 2013 has had the status of an accredited Embassy in Burkina Faso.
Cooperation between Burkina Faso and Luxembourg has been governed by an Indicative Cooperation Program (ICP) since 2003. Activities carried out by Lux-Development, Luxembourg’s development cooperation agency, and United Nations agencies are included in the ICP and benefit from its indicative financial envelope. The activities of non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs) are highly diversified, and their budgets are generally outside the ICP. Similarly, amounts disbursed for humanitarian aid are not included in the ICP. To find out more, click here.
